Lazo Receives President of the Senate of Equatorial Guinea

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 7 (acn) Esteban Lazo, President of the National Assembly of the People’s Power, received Teresa Efua Asangono, President of the Senate of Equatorial Guinea, on Monday.

Lazo, also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC), described as historic the links existing between the two states and asserted that the visit will contribute to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations them even more.

In addition, he recalled that at present Cuba has more than 400 voluntary workers in Guinea, mainly in the fields of health, education and infrastructure, and showed his willingness to expand commercial and social bonds.

Lazo thanked the parliamentarian for her country’s support in the struggle against the U.S. blockade and in favor of the return of the Five Heroes and explained that in spite of the reestablishment of bilateral relations, the United States still illegally occupies a portion of Guantanamo, that the Cuban Adjustment Act persists, as well as restrictions to travel to Cuba, and that recently several countries were affected by the imposition of financial measures for doing business with the Caribbean island.

Asangono said that cooperation between Guinea and Cuba goes back a long way and among objectives of the visit is to increase the bonds of fraternity and cooperation, because Equatorial Guinea is a Third World country in urgent need of technology for development and Cuba can continue sharing it with Guinea.

Likewise, she recalled that the island for more than 40 years now has supported Guinea in sectors like health, education, agriculture, energy, just to name a few and it is its purpose to expand cooperation in the pharmaceutical field, given Cuba’s prestige in medical research and the development of vaccines.

Also on Monday in this capital, the President of the Senate of Equatorial Guinea was a presented with the Friendship Medal, in recognition of her contribution in the strengthening of links between Cuba and her country.

The award, granted by the Council of State at the request of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, was given to Asangono by Lazo during a ceremony at the Institute.

The Delegation of Equatorial Guinea began its official visit by placing a wreath at the monument to Cuba’s National Hero Jose Marti at Havana’s Revolution Square and its departure has been scheduled for Saturday, September 12, after carrying out several activities, such as meetings with leaders of the PCC, the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and the Federation of Cuban Women, as well as visits to places of historic and medical interest.
