Happy 90th Birthday Fidel

Aug 9, 2016 by

Dear Commandante Fidel Castro Ruz;

The National Network On Cuba (NNOC) is honored to join with other organizations and individuals throughout the world in celebrating your 90th birthday.

Fidel, your commitment to humanity could not be clearer than in Cuba whose revolution you have led and epitomized.  Cuba is a unique example in its achievements in health, education, science, human relationships, culture, and sports among other areas.  These are commitments that Cuba has maintained not only for its own citizens but moreover shares with its neighbors throughout the world.

Cuba’s internationalism is exemplary in its contribution to the liberation struggles in Africa where thousands of Cubans died in the successful anti-apartheid wars of liberation, in which as Fidel has said Cubans did not return with gold or precious minerals but only with the bones of her fallen soldiers.  The entire world has benefited from the Cuban response to natural and human made disasters including the tremendous participation in the fight against Ebola in West Africa.  Cuba has not just provided medical assistance but has developed the world’s largest medical school, ELAM, to train health professionals from all parts of the globe including the United States at no cost other than the moral commitment to return and practice in underserved areas of their countries.

Fidel, we note Cuba’s alternative to neoliberalism and your internationalist mission to unify the countries of Latin America in a “Zone of Peace” through initiatives including ALBA, CELAC, and UNASUR.

Fidel, your legacy of peace, justice, dignity, and resistance is not one of words but of deeds; deeds that have positively impacted millions of lives and that will continue to do so.

Fidel, thank you for allowing us to be part of the struggle; thank you for sharing your birthday with us. We pledge to honor you and your birthday by continuing to oppose the United States’ racist, illegal, and immoral blockade of Cuba while working for peace, justice and human rights in our communities.

With appreciation and solidarity,
