Featuring a Photographic Exhibit on the Return of the Cuban 5 to Cuba

December 17 will mark one year since the Presidents of Cuba and the United States agreed to begin a new path between the two countries after over 55 years of hostile relations. The Southern Oregon University United Nations Club in Ashland, Oregon is sponsoring an important 3 day series of events at the university to examine just how much progress has actually taken place between the two countries over the past year in this new era of possibilities. With so many misconceptions about the realities of Cuban society the scheduled programs promise to share a perspective not heard in the main stream media. The events are being co sponsored by the SOU International Studies Program, Peace House, Ashland Culture of Peace Commission, The International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity, and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
Friday, December 4
4:00 PM, The opening of a photographic exhibit entitled The Cuban 5 Return: An Entire Country Celebrates at the Boise Cascade Gallery will include refreshments. The exhibit is curated by social documentary photographer Bill Hackwell who will be present for the opening. The images include his work along with that of seven accomplished Cuban photographers and capture the immediate joy and emotion of the families of the Five and an entire nation upon their return. They represent the continuation of a long line of outstanding social documentary photographers that go back to the time of the Cuban Revolution.
